Well ladies, only 4 more days and we will be scrapping till our hearts are content!! Unlimited scrapping (you can scrap all night long should you desire) Are you excited?? I know you are because so many of you have said so.

Some things you might want to put on your packing list . . .

1. Dress in layers. Sweater or jacket as this room tends to run chilly in my opinion. I personally will bring my little space heater as well because the temperature is supposed to drop again and be in the 40’s this weekend. *PLEASE* note this hotel is over 90 years old and the ball room is very large so it is very hard to regulate the temperature. Best to just come prepared.

2. Fan, if you happen to fall on the other side of the thermostat.

3. Light

4. Extension cord and or power strip (please mark with your name)

5. Cushion or pillow for your tush.

6. **Insulated drinking cup with a lid that does not drip**

7. Address labels for the back of the raffle tickets (eliminates writers cramp).

8. **CASH** to purchase raffle tickets.

9. Snacks … we have very large variety of snacks that will be available for you throughout the weekend including fruit, however if there is something you NEED or desire by all means bring it.

As you know, all of the funds raised this weekend are for ANIMAL RESCUE with rescue and medical care being at an all time high. Whatever amount we raise this weekend will help them immensely!

There will be an Expression Cricut for you to use, you will just need to bring your own mat and cartridges.

Tips To Keep Your Pet Safe This Holiday Season!

Deck the halls with tape and cord covers, fa-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la.
Holiday lights mean extra electrical cords and plugs. For pets, these items can present quite tempting “chew toys.” Taking an extra minute or two during decorating to tape down or cover cords will help prevent shocks, burns or more serious injuries.
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree, how anchored are your branches?
Christmas trees are sure to attract a pet’s attention. Secure Christmas trees to keep them from toppling over if a pet should try to climb them, use them as a scratching post or simply bump into them. Anchoring the top of the tree to the ceiling with a strong cord will help keep it in place around frolicking pets. Keep tinsel decorations high on the tree. Cats are inclined to eat tinsel and/or ribbons hanging from trees, which have the potential to cause an intestinal obstruction.
Bells are ringing, children singing… pets need a quiet place to retreat.
During holiday parties, pets may not understand why their usually quiet home is filled with people and noise. Provide pets with a quiet place to retreat. This way, they can choose whether to come out and visit or keep to themselves.
All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Canines. A special treat in their stocking helps pets enjoy the holidays and keep their teeth pearly white: when it’s chew products specifically designed to satisfy a pet’s natural inclination to chew, that is. Including the right chew products in a pet’s dental care program is an important part of keeping a dog’s teeth and gums healthy, along with regular checkups with a veterinarian. Chews, such as bones, rawhides and compressed vegetable treats, are an easy choice for pet parents who want to improve their dog’s oral hygiene – or who just want to freshen their pet’s breath.

Keep an eye on pets when doors are opening and closing frequently. And all pets should wear ID tags because they can slip out easily in all of the commotion.
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire… aren’t good for pets.
Pet parents often think they’re “treating” their pets with table scraps from their holiday meals. The danger, say PetSmart veterinarians, is that dogs do not have the same digestive system or nutritional needs as people. Products like holiday rawhide are made especially for pets and make a safe, appropriate holiday treat. Chocolate contains the heart stimulant theobromine, and in small quantities can be toxic to dogs and cats, causing vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures, rapid and irregular heartbeats, muscle tremors, comas and, in large quantities, even death.
Oh by gosh, by golly, don’t let them eat mistletoe and holly.
Mistletoe, holly berries and poinsettia plants can be poisonous to pets, causing severe upset stomachs. Pine needles can irritate a pet’s intestine and cause an emergency visit to the vet. Consider using repellent sprays or a doggie gate to help keep pets away from areas and objects that may be harmful.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful. With a sweater on, I’m just delightful.
For the most part, pets should stay warm and indoors during the cold winter months. Some dogs may not adjust as well to the cold weather, so pet parents may consider sweaters to keep their pets comfortable. Pet parents can also ask their vet for good ideas on “winterizing” pets.
Rockin’ around the Christmas tree, separate gifts for you and gifts for me.
Pets don’t know which gifts are meant for them, and which are meant for their parents. Gifts for pets, and any gifts that could be food, should be stored safely away from curious paws and noses.
Over the river and through the woods… for families and pets on the go.
Pet parents boarding pets during the holiday travel season should look for facilities that are clean, and have a friendly staff and strict policies on health and safety issues. Visit the facility ahead of time, meet the staff, check the cleanliness, and confirm that the facility has 24-hour supervision and an on-call vet.
For pet parents traveling with their pets, research can be done in advance to find hotels that accept pets. AAA offers a travel guidebook with this information.

Pets get COLD too!!!!

Don't leave pets outdoors when the temperature drops. To keep warm when it's necessary to be outside, short-coated dogs may feel more comfortable wearing a sweater during walks.

Be sure to feed your pets adequately in the winter. Pets who spend significant time outdoors on walks need more to eat in the winter, since keeping warm depletes energy. Be sure their water is kept fresh.

Use plastic bowls instead of metal for food and water that is served outside. You don't want your pet's tongue getting stuck to his or her dish in icy temps!

Keep your pet's feet clean. Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate paw pads — and may even be harmful if ingested. Wipe feet with a damp towel before your dog or cat gets the chance to lick them!

Make your doghouse comfortable. If your dog does happen to live outside in a doghouse, be sure it's dry and draft-free, and has ample space for the pup to sit and lie down comfortably.

The floor should be raised a few inches off the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered, and the house should be turned to face away from the wind.

Remember, do your best to keep outdoor cats and dogs inside, especially on those brutally cold days. After all, it is the holiday season, meant for spending time with those you love — both with two and four legs!

Bedding

Q: What should I use for bedding? I’ve heard that old blankets aren’t a good idea.

A: You heard right. Blankets and quilts are alright for people inside heated homes but outside, they trap moisture that can make your dog damp, chilly and uncomfortable. A better bedding is fresh clean hay or straw. They allow moisture to evaporate, retain warmth, are biodegradable and cost only a few dollars a bale. The best of these is “salt marsh” hay. All are readily available from farm supply and feed stores, stables, or local farmers. When buying straw or hay, use your nose! It should smell fresh and pleasant like dried grass clippings. Avoid any that smells strongly of mold or mildew. Spread the bedding generously in the dog house, four-to-five inches thick, and replace as needed.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner or Don't Be a Pet Owner at All. If it is too COLD for You - It's too COLD for your Pet

SPCA is asking dog owners not to leave their pets outside in frigid temperatures.

"It's absolutely preposterous to leave a dog -- particularly a short-haired breed like a pit bull -- outside in this weather," SPCA official Eileen Drever said.

Dogs & Cats left outside can succumb to frostbite and hypothermia, which can be fatal or debilitating.
"For the love of your pet, don't leave him outside in this weather," Drever said.
She said leaving dogs outside without proper shelter is an offense under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in Canada.

Already since November 20, the SPCA has seized a number of dogs being kept outside without adequate shelter.
The society opposes the notion of keeping dogs or cats exclusively out of doors, saying they can suffer physical and psychological harm. They may become agitated from such horrid living conditions and it can possibly change their natural demeanor.

Don't hesitate to call your local SPCA if you witness pet neglect or endangerment this Winter.

Something to think about....What would happen if everyone that stepped up to adopt or foster a dog that made the news was willing to help out a dog that has been waiting patiently in the shelter/humane society/ rescue for someone to notice them and love them? What a difference people could make if they were willing to open their homes to a wallflower

The Loneliest Victim

Many wonderful people open their homes to the victimized pets made famous by media reports, but close their hearts to the other animals in the shelter

Buddy is ugly. Really. He's a good dog, a Shar Pei mix (OK, I admit, I'm no fan of Shar-Peis) with a bristly coat. He's already neutered, walks well on a leash, four years old, a little overweight (read fat), and he loves people. He also has entropion, a slight case that will cost extra to fix for a potential new owner. His owner leans down to him, rests his forehead on Buddy's, and when he lifts his head, he's crying. He signs the paper and turns away, without looking back. Buddy follows me willingly, as he has done everything in his life.

"Why'd he sign him over?" I ask the staffer at the front desk.

"His wife is pregnant, and won't let Buddy in the house anymore. She says Buddy belongs in a house with his people."

I nod. Whew. That's a tough one. I silently send up a prayer for that marriage, and a hope that the wife will see her husband's broken heart and send him back for Buddy.

Two days later and that hasn't happened. Buddy is still here, on the decision list. Along with eight other dogs, including a Doberman pup who had his throat slashed in a domestic argument. That one will find a home. He's been on the news, and there are five people, at least, willing to adopt him and love him and save him. The pup is poorly socialized, still has some hefty vet bills and training problems to work through, and he has to recover enough from the initial assault to be anesthetized for his neuter surgery. Meanwhile, we screen the list of candidates to decide who gets him.

It happens every time a dog or cat makes the news with a pitiful story of abuse or neglect. Many wonderful people call in or show up, wanting to adopt the animal who has been treated so horribly. They open their homes to dogs or cats who have long lists of problems, but close their hearts to the others in our kennels—dogs like Buddy, who has probably never been mistreated in his life, who deserves and misses, probably more than any other, a loving home, and would be willing to give his heart and soul to a new family. Buddy's not a victim, though; no one lines up to save him. The kennels are full, and he has this eye problem.

So I hang Buddy's tag down, and mark him on the list.

Tomorrow morning, after we feed the dogs and before we open for business, Buddy will be euthanized humanely.

Because he's not a victim.

Someone ought a tell Buddy.

These techniques are great for scrapbook pages too! It takes a special scrapbook page and elevates it to a higher level!! Your friends will be envious of all you will learn in this class.

We will be making three (3) projects: 2 Cards and a 3 dimensional. Don’t worry you will have plenty of time and materials for practicing!

Hang in there, it WILL get better! You are perfect just the way you are, and have so much to offer the world... more than anyone can imagine!

If you've never seen the video it will make you cry. "Ricochet" and her mom do a lot to help animals and folks who are differently-abled. They want to get the message out there that, no matter what anyone tells you, you're wonderful...just as you are.

I have not posted lately as I have been furiously working away on our upcoming crop in Jan!

As most of you probably already know, we were SOLD OUT as of September 16th and are now at 53 attendees and there are still a few more that need to be added (on-site store ladies etc)

To those of you whom are new here to the blog, I am going to insert a few links for you to read and watch videos from our first fundraiser this past June. The first one is a post that I did on my personal blog following the event and you can view it here.Then of course, the post here at home at Cause For The PAWS can be viewed here.

Donations are starting to arrive and I will be updating the blog soon about those as well!

It's astonishing and upsetting to know just how many animals have to be destroyed because there is no one willing to give them a home.

It's a myth that all shelter dogs are somehow less intelligent, less trainable, or less worthwhile than ones gotten from other sources.

More people are willing to buy from a backyard breeder of dubious character than to adopt a dog from a shelter. That's just wrong!

A Letter From A Shelter Manager

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT

For those of you that care --- please repost this to at least one other person. Let's see if we can get this all around the World and have an impact.

Every year, six to eight million cats and dogs are put into shelters – and as many as four million are euthanized. With the drastic economic crisis that has hit the United States, our shelters and rescues are struggling to provide for the animals that have been abandoned on their doorsteps.

With your help, we can change this!

This is a time when local animals need us the most! With the recession and home foreclosure crisis costing them their homes and families, thousands of innocent animals depend upon us to save, rescue and adopt them, more now, than ever before.

Please join us January 7th, 8th, and 9th for “Cause for the PAWS Crop” 2 to benefit animal rescue. This will be held at the Kenilworth Lodge in Sebring, Florida.

Crop begins at 3pm Friday through 3pm Sunday.

Below you will find some basic information regarding this incredible event.

Well ladies, I am still spinning from this weekend as you can all imagine. I know that I am starting to sound a bit like a broken record but I have to say thank you once again to each and every one of you. If it were not for you, my dream would not have become a reality!

Most of you have probably already heard that the next two “Cause for the PAWS” events have been scheduled.

I have made the executive decision to keep the number of registrants to 50 therefore the idea of having 2 crops a year was born.

November 4^th, 5^th & 6^th 2011

Both will be held at the Kenilworth Lodge again. All the details will be sent out, but for now there are a lot of details to be handled to wrap up our first event.

DISTRESS, LAYER, STAMP AND EMBOSS with Pam

This class will show you how to use Distress Inks, metal and embossing in a layered effect to use on your scrapbook pages, cards or wall hangings. Some of the layering will include 2 kinds of crackle medium, chipboard treatments, fibers, masking and embellishments. Lots of techniques. You will complete 4-6 different tags that can be used as samples for “how to’s” for later or put right onto a scrapbook page.

Cost: $15.00 includes all supplies and use of stamps, inks, powders, etc.

Class will be 1-2 hours depending on how many tags you make.

Please bring scissors, stylus and clear craft glue

Getting Fancy with Copic with Janet

Explore all the fun you can have with Copic Markers. This workshop is designed to help you create using alcohol inks and your Copic Markers. In this class you will splash into fun using Fancy Pants Designs Rusted Sun Summer Line of papers, and coordinating embellishments. Using Copic Markers you will embellish a clear acrylic scallop accordion mini album made by Maya Road all while working on all types of surfaces such as the acrylic, transparencies, bling, and so much more. In this workshop you will also use the airbrush system by Copic as well to highlight areas in this mini album. This class is filled with product, information, and so much more.

Sketch This with Coleen
This workshop is designed to help you take your work to the next level. In this class we take a sketch from Becky Flecks popular book Scrapbook Page Maps, and use it to design a layout of our own. In this class you will use the latest and greatest products from Basic Grey’s Max and Whiskers NEW line of papers. We will work with a variety of products including: designer papers, rub-ons, bling, fibers, and ink. Be prepared to take your work to the next level! This kit is jammed full of products. You will get pops, element stickers, dollies, rub ons, and all the papers.
This is a 2 page layout and will be approx. 2 hours. $25
Your basic tool kit will be required: Trimmer, Adhesive, Scissors, Pop Dots, Brown Distress Inks, and a rub-on tool. Diamond Glaze, or Crystal Lacquer is optional.

Flower Power Class with Natasha

In this class I'll be teaching lots of different ways to make different flowers for your scrapbook and craft projects. This class will be full of different techniques that you have probably never tried before! I've narrowed it down to my top 10 favorite flowers, so not only will you learn how to make those 10 but you will learn how to make some variations of those too using different techniques and product. You won't go home with just flowers though, I'm going to be giving you a cute little flower recipe book to embellish that will have all your flower instructions printed up for you inside, just to refresh your memory when making your flowers at home!

The Class fee is $15.00 and every bit of that goes to the Cause for the Paws Charity!

We Are Killing Our Pets With Food!!!!

Controlling your dog's weight

This is something you have all heard me preach about and I can only hope that the majority of you will take this serious as we are literally killing our pets with food!! My pets treats are one nibblet of their regular food. And believe me they are just as happy as when I was rewarding them with biscuits (very high in calories I might add)! What humans cannot seem to get is that for your pet, it is not the actual reward itself but rather the fact that you are happy with their behavior.

Chubby canines can be cute, but being overweight is bad for a dog's health too. Dr. Ernie Ward, author of the new book "Chow Hounds" visited Good Day with some tips on keeping your dog at a healthy weight.

Dr. Ward will be signing copies of his book on Thursday, April 8, at the Barnes & Noble at 11802 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. The signing starts at 7 p.m. For more information, call Barnes & Noble at (813) 962-6446.

Donations, we have had some fabulous items donated so far! It obviously is impossible for me to post pictures of every single item but keep checking in as I try to periodically post one here and there. Please keep in mind that if you have ANYTHING (scrap related or not) to donate, we will graciously accept it!! I will be in Tampa on Friday April 2nd picking up items donated from numerous people whom have rallied together through "Lost Angels" and would be more then happy to come to you as well ; }

Class information is starting to come in. There is going to be 5-6 classes offered and once I receive them all I will post pictures along with descriptions. You can then contact me to sign up.....

Mr. Peabody, nine-months-old husky, left runs in his cart with his owner and veterinarian Ann Campbell at Plaza Pet Clinic Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Mr. Peabody's was attacked by a bobcat when he was just a week old. He survived the attack but lost both his hind legs.

Mr. Peabody is the luckiest husky on two wheels.

Just days old when he was maimed by a bobcat, he now rolls through his northwest-side neighborhood in a doggie wheelchair looking sassy and self-assured.

Life could have been much different for Mr. Peabody.

The backyard breeders who planned to sell Mr. Peabody and his littermates didn't want to spend the money to have a vet euthanize the puppy after his hind legs, part of his tail and part of a front paw were gnawed off by a bobcat last summer.

Neighbor Robi Campbell learned of the situation and confronted one of the breeders.

"She (the breeder) said when her husband came home they would probably drown him."

Horrified, Campbell called Pima Animal Care Center and her veterinarian, Ann Campbell, no relation.

"It destroyed me to know these people did this," Robi Campbell said.

A day later, an animal control officer investigated and found a second injured pup - her tail had been chewed off. The puppy was taken to Ann Campbell's office, Plaza Pet Clinic on West Ina Road, where the husky was treated and placed in an adoptive home.
Though Mr. Peabody's injuries were severe, the vet opted to try and repair the damage.

"I just felt he was meant to be here," said the vet. "If he survived for two or three days with those injuries, who am I to say he has to die? He had a will to live. All you can do is offer help and see if they run with it."

Mr. Peabody has learned to negotiate the small veterinary clinic and Ann Campbell's home by using his front legs to scoot along on his butt, chasing after toys and his new owner's cats. He weighed just 2 pounds when he was found, and now, at 8 months, tips the scales at 55 pounds.

Ann Campbell fashioned Mr. Peabody's doggie wheelchair from roller skate parts and a knee pad. In October he was fitted with a cart he could grow into. After watching - then chasing - one of Ann Campbell's neighbors who uses a wheelchair, Mr. Peabody got the idea.

"Peabody had a Helen Keller moment," the veterinarian said. "You should have seen the look on his face: 'I get it!' "

"Edie" rescued yesterday an hour before euthanasia!!

Eldad Hagar & his wife are definitely at the top of my list of hero's!! They run a rescue group in Los Angeles, California called "Hope for Paws" and will definitely be considered as one of our recipients for financial help next year as our funds grow with the help of ALL of you!

Classes:

Tantalizing classes will be held on Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday.
Information on these classes will be forwarded to each registrant once classes are scheduled.
The blog will also be updated with class information as it becomes available.
A full range of classes on unique techniques will be offered each day.
Leave each class with a completed project or a new idea for use in your scrapbook.

Once in a blue moon, we come across an opportunity to participate in a point in history that's so special, it changes who we are as individuals and as a culture. We are so very grateful to have connected with so many animals lovers in recent months as we walk into a brand new era together. Author and anthropologist Mary Elizabeth Thurston signals this new era in her musings, below. Wishing Happy New Year to all our friends and the creatures they hold dear.

The Path to a New Ethic

"History tells us that the welfare of the individual - humane or canine - is irrevocably tied to the welfare of the community. Now we have studies showing that children who care for dogs are more likely to mature into emotionally healthier adults, and that canine companionship prolongs the length and quality of life. Capable of remarkable love, the dog gives us what we crave most - a sense of belonging.

Throughout our shared history with dogs, it has been the spark of love between one person and one pet that became the catalyst for social change. That this canine "ephiphany" is now happening with increasing frequency points to a revolution in our concept of ourselves - our growing acceptance that we are part of the community of animals, not above or separate from it. With overpopulation, urbanization and habitat destruction threatening our personal links to the natural world, the role of the dog in bringing us to this new awareness cannot be trivialized.

Pet keeping is now one of the Western values being exported to cultures where animals have traditionally been viewed as consumable resources. With only the affluent in these countries able to afford keeping dogs for pleasure, pets again are becoming emblems of prestige, just as they were in nineteenth-century Europe. So we might ask, as the far reaches of the globe are transformed by a second wave of industrialization, whether the human-dog relationship in these developing nations will follow the same evolutionary pattern. Will the camera again document a canine pilgrimage from slave to soulmate as these societies grapple with concepts of self-determination and a compassionate ethic that embraces us all?" - Mary Elizabeth Thurston

Hope each of you have a blessed 2010 and may there be less homeless, hungry, abused, sick, abandoned, victims of foreclosure pets!! May every pet in a shelter or rescue be adopted & every lost pet on the streets find their way home & all the rescues & shelters close because there'd be no pets to rescue. Here's to hoping for a perfect world in 2010!

Don't Shop!!! Adopt Your Next Pet ; }

Shelter, dog pound, rescue agency, and humane society are all terms that are incorrectly interchanged with each other.

There are many people who think they are all basically the same thing. This could not be further from the truth. Some of these entities are government ran and some are privately ran.

An example of a government ran agency would be a county dog pound. County dog pounds may also be called a “shelter.”

Many of the government ran agencies are “kill” shelters. Because they are ran by tax dollars, they have limited funds and limited resources. They are usually run by a warden and they take in unwanted or problem dogs and sometimes cats.

These pound puppies are given a small amount of time to be reunited with their owners or to be adopted out. The amount of time varies from area to area.

Sometimes it is a week or two and sometimes, as it is locally, only a few days.

Most rescue agencies are privately ran and funded entirely by the generosity of animal lovers.

Most of these shelters are also called “no kill” shelters. No kill means that animals that are under their care will never be destroyed.

If they are not adopted, they will spend their life with the rescue agency.

Some agencies have facilities were they keep the pets and some have several foster homes that keep the dogs and prep them for adoption.

Both types of agencies have great pets looking for great homes. Even if you desire a purebred pooch, check with one of these agencies.

There is full stock dogs put down everyday in pounds across America. With so many pets needing a home, take a look at shelters before paying a big price.

Think carefully before adopting a shelter dog. Even if some of these pets are on borrowed time, they are still lifetime commitments.

A shelter dog comes with a past. There may be challenges to face such as, fear of humans, food aggressions, aggression towards other dogs or people.

Most of the challenges can be overcome, but will take patience and training. It is important that they do not end up back in the very shelter you rescued them from.

These pets are waiting for a second chance, they are waiting on you. So, the next time you feel like extending your family, check out your local shelter or dog pound.

If you are in the market for a cat, again, check these places out. There are many shelter cats also waiting for new homes.

The more adoption friendly agencies even offer free spays or neuter and sometimes a vet check-up.

This brings me to my last point. As Bob Barker or Drew Carey would say, “Help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered.” If everyone would have this done or breed responsibly, there would not be so many homeless pets. Remember, every dog deserves to be treated like a show dog.
